This
Rose Window measures 9 feet in diameter and is situated 30
feet above altar. The Book of Kells is a large
format manuscript of the Latin text of the gospels.
Although the
place of origin has long been disputed, it has two locations
of questionable origin. First is the island off Mull in
western
Scotland
, called
Iona. The second, is the

in Kells, Ireland. Some other research shows that the
Book of Kells was written by the Monks, in Iona, Scotland, to
transform the gospel passages in a language known to the
people of the area in 384 A.D. Hence,
it was taken by the Irish Kings to
Ireland
, and now sits in Trinity
College, Dublin, where a page is turned each day.
The
Icons depicted on the Rose Window are described as the four
gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. They tell the story
of Christ. The icon of Matthew is shown as a Man,
symbolizing Christ's birth. The icon of Luke is
shown as a calf, symbolizing Christ's death. The icon of Mark
is shown as a Lion, symbolizing Christ's Resurrection.
The icon of John is shown as an Eagle, symbolizing Christ's
Ascension. In addition, the Celtic knot is shown in
the form of a cross, symbolizing God's endless love. |
